2021 is going to be a strange year. I’ll be going through the rawest rituals of all; Child Birth, and my partner and I will be raising our first born child together, during a Pandemic.
Though the year looks like it’s going to be spent socially distancing, we will be making the most out of it by working further on our art, both in fashion and music. We are currently in the process of writing two new albums, one for Fedrespor and one for Voluspá – And I am researching how to open a web shop – … Somehow, I feel like this baby has given me a new kind of creative spark, and my intuition has also grown stronger. The strengthening of these abilities have come with great cost, but I feel like it will be worth it in the end. After all, everything worth doing in life is hard. I remind myself of that whenever I feel like giving up or talk myself down. I hope you all remind yourselves of that too.

This Yule was spent doing a small but important Winter Solstice ritual by ourselves in the forest. We’ve just bought and moved into our first and most of the time these days is spent right here, in our nest. I’m kind of an introverted person by nature, so that’s actually fine by me, though I must say that I miss my family terribly.

These are the first pregnancy photos we’ve taken, shot right outside our door, (unfortunately without snow). I think there will be one or two more shoots before the baby’s arrival to Midgard (hopefully with snow) (:

Winter, 2019 (A list of what is up)

 winter1pppppppwinter2

Hello! I’ve been away for too long, I know. The last semester of my studies required a lot of work and I needed to prioritize that. Glad I did, because I learned so much and I got good results too! Been yearning for more creativity in my life and I believe now is the time for it.

So, what’s up?

  • Finished my studies in December, feel vey humble and proud at the same time. Blood, sweat and tears for 6 years = Cand.psychol.
  • I’ve started sewing again. Got so many meters of fabric just waiting to be turned into viking creations. Started with this apron dress, that is based on the Oseberg find.
  •  On New Years Eve I started planning upping my game here. (FINALLY, I know. Believe me it’s been in my mind a lot). Since then I’ve been photographing content that I will share on here.
  • This monday I will reveal something here on my website that I have been aching to tell you about! It’s related to music, I can tell you that much;)
  • Got a few collaborations coming up that I am very excited to reveal as well.
  • Other than that, I’ve spent much needed time with family and kept myself busy working out and preparing for the future. Everyday life happens.

Dear readers: Hope everything is going great for you.
Thanks for sticking around, it truly means a lot!
Please tag along, I will make it worthwhile.

Midgardsblot Metal Festival was fantastic, as always. I saw Garmarna and Dimmu Borgir and those are amongst my top ten favourite bands. The latter almost cost me my voice, sorry not sorry to those of you standing next to me during that concert. I met so many interesting, talented and kind hearted people, and I laughed more than I have done in months… Post festival blues are inevitable, wish the festival lasted a whole week. More photos to come!

Winter is here

winterwinter2winter3

Winter is here. It feels as if the snow buried my creativity, and I had to face it in order to restore balance from within. I figured the best way to clear one’s head is to spend time in nature, far away from other human beings. The snow almost swallowed me whole, I felt as if I was swimming in it. A real Fimbul Winter. I might have dug up my creativity as I snapped some photos, because I instantly felt more alive posing in the icy wind. It’s been a while, I whispered to the trees. Time to get back into my viking game… For real.

I hope you’d like to see more photos, because that’s what’s coming.

The dress from Hel

hel3hel4hel

You know when you get this nifty idea that “you should just make one quick dress before the next viking market”? You know – that genius idea of throwing together just one more piece of garb for shits and giggles? Don’t do it. Just don’t. I got that idea three days before Gudvangen and that’s when I made the mustard chemise I am wearing in the pictures above. In all honesty, the dress was awful to make. Sure – It came together nicely in the end, but it was a living nightmare to sew together…. Here’s what happened:

I used no pattern. I always, always make the pattern on the go – just out of my head. This time was no different, all fun and games. One probably thinks this is where I went wrong, but that’s not it. You see- even though the measurements were right, sewing the different pieces together was painfully impossible. I sweated like a pig during the whole process which -by the way- lasted for days (hahahaha!!). I had to re-do all the seams five(!!!) times. I have never in my life had so much Hel with a viking dress as this one, and I’ve made quite a few – even hand stitched ones. At one point n the sewing process I was certain that the dress itself was cursed and I was so angry at it that I almost destroyed my entire sewing gear. While I was sewing this horrible dress, I cursed, sweated, laughed hysterically, cried and bled. Seeing my own blod drip from the needles fueled my anger and naturally, I gushed it into the seams of the chemise with full force. I wanted to burn the dress, I wanted to bury it. Truly, I thought to myself -this dress must have been ordered from Hel.

Why was it was so difficult to make…? Like I said – I spent days working on it. The last hours of the last day before departure I was so flustered that my mother offered (or rather – forced me to allow her) to help with it. “I am sure we can figure this out quickly of we work together,” she said. Boy, was she wrong. To this day none of us can understand why this dress was so difficult. I mean – we did everything right, we even double checked each others work – but it just wasn’t going that well for us. As you can see, we managed to conquer the dress in the end. We both worked on it up until one hour before departure to Gudvangen going on no sleep and way too much coffee. Yes, ladies and gentlemen – sometimes sewing is an awful experience. As we did the last fitting, me looking as if I had survived the last warrior on the battlefield, my mother gazed at me and said; “That colour does not do you any good, my dear… It is really NOT a good colour for you.” It was dead silent for about a minute and then we both laughed so much that we cried. I think we got an hour of sleep before my friends came to pick me up.

I am sure that I’m not the only one who has been struggling with a sewing project (for reasons unknown and despite following all the right steps) – I might be one of few to speak up about how awful making simple viking garb can be, but I know you are out there, suffering in silence between needles and endless seams. Don’t give up! But please, don’t be a fool like me. Start on time before a viking event. The Gods know it is stressful enough as it is. LOL.

Daydreaming about the upcoming market season

markets15market11markets12market13market7market6marketsmarkets16markets17

My friends and I are currently planning the upcoming season – carefully choosing which markets to attend. Naturally, I would love to experience them all- but that is simply not possible. Though plans are still in the making – we do know one thing for sure; This summer shall be a celebration worthy of the gods and goddesses! I am really looking forward to the Medieval- and Viking Market season this year…So much that I find myself daydreaming about it on a daily basis. The smell of bonfire, late night shenanigans and mead drinking is so close that I can almost taste it. Sigh.. We’ll just have to wait a little longer. It shall be worth it, I can promise you that.

Which market(s) are you going to?

Hey! Just checking in to tell you that I have started sewing viking clothing (and creating some other goodies) for my very own web shop! I am hoping that you guys have some patience with me – as this is a one woman project (at least for now). Being a full time student at uni, This might take a while- BUT I would rather have it take time than delivering products that I cannot stand for. Quality, authenticity and style is very important to me, and I cannot wait to show you the finished products. I will keep you posted -so don’t worry about missing out on the opening of my shop. Also – I will announce it beforehand at instagram, on my Facebook page and here at my viking blog. Thank you so much for the lovely feedback I have gotten on these plans – you guys motivate me to work hard at this task. And thank you for waiting<3
This will be grand.

Also; I’ve had quite a few photoshoots lately.
Pictures coming up – stay tuned *waves eagerly*

If you follow me on Instagram (@thevikingqueen)  you’ve probably seen that I will embark on my very own “viking clothing designer” journey soon. I will open my own online shop store and sell handmade viking garb by yours truly! Please have some patience with me as I am a full time student and need to focus on school for a few more weeks to come before I can even start this project. These irritating creative impulses need to be tamed for some time before I can finally unleash my inner beast -and go bat shit crazy with scissors and needles;)

Anyhow, I will keep you guys posted and announce the opening of the shop some days beforehand.

-Yule outfit, 2015-

joletid

Gleðileg jól! I have celebrated yule for days now with my nearest and dearest. Ale, mead and meat was on the menu. Ah, it was glorious! As you can see, there is no snow in the Northern realms. My parents live in the south even though my whole family comes from the north of Norway. This time of year makes me miss the northern light and the cold, clear air a little extra.

Winter solstice and the “return”of the sun is worth celebrating. I wandered deep into the woods to commune with spirits of olde, to worship the moon and the sun. To me, Yuletide is about keeping the ancient norse traditions alive. Year after year, after year.

The Outfit: is hand sewn, made by me (100% linen, and 100% wool) The tablet weave is Oseberg style. The pelt is 100% wolf(!) – vintage and smelly. Haha! Seriously, though…It is kind of smelly. When buying vintage pelts you may have to hang them outside for some time to make the smell go away.

How do you celebrate this time of year? I hope you’re having a blast whatever you are doing. Stay close to those you hold dear, and honor those that have passed. Be kind to others, maybe even more than usual this time of year…You never know what people might be going through.
